Choose an image format

Use the format that matches transparency, editing, and output needs.

Documentation-based guide

Based on upstream documentation. These steps have not been independently tested in the desktop app; menu labels and behavior may differ by release.

Step by step

  1. Use PNG for transparency

PNG is a good sharing format for transparent graphics and crisp shapes. It is a raster export, not the editable source for your layers or text.

  2. Use JPEG for an opaque photograph

JPEG is often practical for a flat photograph where a smaller file matters. It uses lossy compression and does not preserve transparency. Start with a copy and avoid repeated lossy saves.

  3. Keep a layered working file

Use a supported layered format for editing, then export a flat deliverable. Check read and write separately: a format can import but not export, or differ between desktop and browser builds.

  4. Treat SVG as a separate test

Upstream documents SVG import, while our originals use simple self-contained shapes. Check the actual rendered result and layer behavior. A browser-rendered PNG is a useful fallback when vector import fails.

PhotoCraft is in early alpha. Keep original files and test a copy before relying on it for important work.
