PSD compatibility: what to check

Opening a document, keeping it editable, and exchanging it are different tests.

Documentation-based guide

Based on upstream documentation. These steps have not been independently tested in the desktop app; menu labels and behavior may differ by release.

Step by step

  1. Create a reference

Preserve the original PSD and a flattened reference exported by its authoring app. Record the PhotoCraft version, operating system, fonts, and the specific features used.

  2. Inspect the parts that matter

Compare appearance and inspect editable layers, text, masks, blend modes, effects, and smart objects. Unsupported data being preserved does not guarantee it can be edited or rendered identically.

  3. Test the full exchange

Save a new PSD, reopen it in PhotoCraft, then reopen it in the destination Photoshop version if that is your real workflow. Check editability and appearance again. Without this final test, label the exchange unverified.

  4. Avoid universal claims

Upstream corpus results cover particular files and tests. They do not certify your file, every effect, or every Photoshop version. This site does not yet publish independent desktop compatibility scores.

PhotoCraft is in early alpha. Keep original files and test a copy before relying on it for important work.
