Can I use my Photoshop assets?

Separate file compatibility from permission to redistribute a resource.

Documentation-based guide

Based on upstream documentation. These steps have not been independently tested in the desktop app; menu labels and behavior may differ by release.

Step by step

  1. Identify the resource type

A PSD template, .abr brush, .cube LUT, .pat pattern, plug-in, script, and .atn action are different formats. Compatibility with one does not establish compatibility with the others.

  2. Check upstream support

Read the format and feature documentation for your installed release. Do not install a Photoshop plug-in into PhotoCraft merely because both applications edit PSDs. Test small, trusted files first.

  3. Inspect import behavior

For a brush, test stroke shape and dynamics; for a LUT, inspect neutral colors; for a template, inspect text and layers. A file appearing in a list is not a complete usability test.

  4. Respect the creator’s license

Owning a downloaded asset does not necessarily let you distribute it. Check commercial-use and redistribution permissions separately. Our own starting files are released under CC0; upstream application code has its own license.

PhotoCraft is in early alpha. Keep original files and test a copy before relying on it for important work.
